Coffee

Post by Readymom »

NCA National Coffee Association
http://www.ncausa.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=70

Storage is integral to maintaining your coffee's freshness and flavor. It is important to keep it away from excessive air, moisture, heat, and light -- in that order -- in order to preserve its fresh-roast flavor as long as possible. Coffee beans are decorative and beautiful to look at but you will compromise the taste of your coffee if you store your beans in ornamental, glass canisters on your kitchen countertop. Doing so will cause them to become stale and your coffee will quickly lose its fresh flavor.

STORE YOUR DAILY COFFEE...

It is important not to refrigerate or freeze your daily supply of coffee because contact with moisture will cause it to deteriorate. Instead, store coffee in air-tight glass or ceramic containers and keep it in a convenient, but dark and cool, location. Remember that a cabinet near the oven is often too warm, as is a cabinet on an outside wall of your kitchen if it receives heat from a strong afternoon or summer sun.

The commercial coffee containers that you purchased your coffee in are generally not appropriate for long-term storage. Appropriate coffee storage canisters with an airtight seal are a worthwhile investment.

Coffee Plants!

mmpaints @ American Prepper Network:
* Link Unavailable. This site is no longer active and available to view on line.

 mmpaints: I grow coffee. I've had coffee plants continually going for several years.

 Arabica Dateura loves direct sunlight, is tolerant of a wide variety of temperatures and handles drought well. They are by far the easiest strain of coffee plant to grow for the home gardening enthusiast. I keep them in big planters on rollers and move them into the southern exposure windows thru the winter. I've had 6 coffee plants live 8 years that way until kittens killed them. I fertilize them every 3 months with bunny berry tea and they do great. I am very excited about my new ones coming on, This time I will protect them better if I have kittens in the house over the winter.

Where did you get the seeds to start with?

Coffee-Long Term Storage

Long Term Coffee Storage For When TSHTF
http://www.shtfblog.com/long-term-coffee-storage-for-when-tshtf/

by JARHEAD SURVIVOR on FEBRUARY 4, 2011

Image I’m a coffee addict. If there’s a recommended daily allowance of caffeine I surely take in five times what they suggest. For starters I’ll drink three cups of coffee first thing in the morning. There’s nothing better than getting up in the morning and having a delicious hot cup of dark roast while my son is eating breakfast. At work I’ll occasionally wait until noon time for my next two or three cups, but usually I have another cup or two at 9:30 am or so. Then I’ll have another cup or two around 2:00 pm. And then another cup or two – or even a CoffeeArmy cappuccino – around 7:00 pm. Just enough to smooth me out and put me to sleep. Crazy eh?

-snip-

I called a local coffee shop and the conversation went something like this:

Me: Hi. I'd like to ask you a question about storing coffee.

Young Woman: Ok. Go ahead. ---CONTINUED---

Coffee with Chicory-Found in Nature!

Hat Tip to "cityhomesteader" over at American Preppers Network:

 "about coffee... Down through the years pioneers adulterated their limited supply of hard to find coffee with the root of a common field weed called Chicory. 30% roasted ground chicory root is the ratio for the blend. You can make it half and half and it still makes a great cup of joe: "

Chicory was long used a coffee substitute when coffee itself was scarce, but in the modern-day, adding a bit of chicory to coffee provides a robust flavor that can turn coffee into a rare delicacy. ---Read MORE at LINK, above ---

Roasting Coffee And Storing For Long Term Use

(SNIP) ... Going without it when you are used to it can make life seem a lot more bleak and let’s be honest, makes plenty of people grumpy and not necessarily the easiest to deal with.

Roasting your own coffee is something anyone can do and it helps reduce the cost of coffee on your grocery bill. At the very least, you can afford to drink better quality coffee if you roast your own at home. ---CONTINUED---

Hey! You love coffee. I get it. You also want to make sure you can brew a cup or two during the zombie apocalypse, and I don’t blame you! With or without electricity, you need that caffeine!Fixing coffee without electricity is surprisingly easy! Electrickettles, grinders, and coffee pots are not the be-all, end-all. All you need is a good source of heat, whether it’s a campfire, gas range, or heck, an old-fashioned potbelly stove. ---CONTINUED---
