It's nice to have several sets of walkie-talkies. Get 4 or 6 of them with VERY SHORT range for doing neighborhood watch, so that you will get fewer eaves-droppers. (a pair is less than $20.00)

The longer range ones are good for keeping in-touch while you are out and about in the car. For long range conversations, keep it short and to-the point, avoiding references to home addresses, street names, people's names, particular assets, etc. [snip]

Note: Make sure to have LOTS of extra batteries on hand for this item!

The Best MURS Radios
https://www.backdoorsurvival.com/the-best-murs-radios/

Short range radio communications have some major advantages at times. First the radios used are often much more functional and rugged for general use than a cell phone and besides the initial purchase price and the cost of keeping up the batteries, they are less expensive than a cell phone. When cells won’t work, your short range radios probably still will.

The MURS system allows civilian users to have a radio network that does not require any special certifications or licenses to get. There is little wonder to the fact that there are a lot of choices for radios. ---CONTiNUED---

Hand Held Radios aka Walkie Talkies Where-to-buy-the-best-shtf-radio-types-890x395_c In a major disaster, cell phones won’t keep working for long. A nuclear EMP would wreck the whole infrastructure in a few seconds; a less violent event might leave them running for a few days, until essential maintenance didn’t get done or the power went off. Soon enough, though, cell phones and the internet would be a thing of the past. ---CONTINUED---

Two Way Radios, (FRS/GMRS) Buying Tips
https://livingprepared.blogspot.com/2018/09/two-way-radios-frsgmrs-buying-tips_18.html

Below is my backup set of two-way radios, their purpose is to be backup radios or to loan to others/neighbors during an event when there’s no grid-power and their cell phone batteries are depleted. Dead cell phone batteries are a common occurrence during an event because many people are heavy phone or tablet users must re-charge their phones every day. For those with dead batteries, some simple form of communication with others is reassuring during the power outage event. Two-Way radios are also good when used for neighborhood patrol/security communicating. ---CONTINUED---
