Here's a write-up on Reverse Osmosis, RO, water purification, in the context of application in a SHTF senario.

First, there are many ways to make water safe to drink, hiking type hand pumps, water purification tablets, chlorine [bleach], boiling, RO, and distillation to mention a few.

Each has it's place, with the attendant advantages and disadvantages.

How Reverse Osmosis Works
https://science.howstuffworks.com/reverse-osmosis.htm

Reverse osmosis is one of the processes that makes desalination (or removing salt from seawater) possible. Beyond that, reverse osmosis is used for recycling, wastewater treatment, and can even produce energy.

Water issues have become an extremely pressing global threat. With climate change come unprecedented environmental impacts: torrential flooding in some areas, droughts in others, rising and falling sea levels. Add to that the threat of overpopulation -- and the demand and pollution a swelling population brings -- and water becomes one of the paramount environmental issues to watch for in the next generation. ---CONTINUED---

Although tap water in the United States is generally considered safe to drink, it may contain various pollutants, such as chlorine, metals or different types of additives. One of the most common treatments for contaminated water is the homemade reverse osmosis system. The process works by applying water pressure to the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane to remove contaminants and produce purified water. This process isn't just for tap water. The do-it-yourself treatment can also be used to produce reverse osmosis maple syrup. ---CONTINUED---
