Medical Books to Have on Hand

When tshtf (be it a pandemic or other emergency/disaster) it's a good idea to have a couple of medical textbooks in the house to use as a reference. Many would be difficult to understand without a medical dictionary, so I'd recommend purchasing one of those as well.

So here goes:

1) Cecils Essentials of Medicine -- this is the reader's digest version of the Int. Med textbook. It's a bit pricier than the CDT but better at explaining a disease process. Used copies are in the $30+ range.

2) Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment (a/k/a CDT) Amazon had a 2004 used copy for $4.50

3) Common Symptom Guide -- you can look up the symptom and it suggested what disease processes to explore. About $20 used

4) Tabers Medical Dictionary. Old used copies are around $5.

5) If you want to expand your collection -- Bates Guide to Physical Exams -- very pricey / even used it's up over $100, but it shows pictures of what a problem looks like.

Obviously if you have kids, you'll probably want the CDT for pediatrics. Most med students hang onto their books for about 5-8 years (anything older on an office shelf and the Jacho (inspectors) crew will comment on them - at which point they are offered for sale.

If the books seem pricey used just remember how much the new versions are. My first semester in school, I spent four figures on textbooks (makes me ill just thinking of it!)

Check out Amazon and half.com for used book bargains.

Great book with natural healing information and details of side effects and interactions organized by the name of the herb as well as by medical conditions.

From Pandemic Flu Information:

 "Edna Mode"Good thread, HBB.

I have several books that I consider essential, including a really good first aid book.

Two new books that I received for Christmas (aren't I pathetic?) are:

Wilderness Medicine Beyond First Aid by William W. Forgey, M.D. and the one NP1 mentioned, Where There Is No Doctor a Village Health Care Handbook by David Werner, Carol Thuman and Jane Maxwell.

-snip-

Both books include information on not only on what you should have but how to dose and treat for many conditions, as well as contraindications of the medications and treatments. I highly, highly recommend both.

 "Lake Effect"I'd suggest the Merck Manual Home Edition. It is a very helpful resource to have around. Inexpensive on Amazon, or you can find the whole thing online for free at:
http://www.merck.com/mmhe/index.html

You can also view the professional edition
http://www.merck.com/mmpe/index.html

 "EMTim"I like Lippincott's Nursing Drug Guide as a good guide to drugs.

WikiBooks has an extensive section on first aid that has been put together by numerous sources. The online version is great but we don’t want to be counting on having computer access in an emergency. You can PRINT the entire WikiBook by downloading THIS PDF. It’s over 100 pages but it’s mostly black and white and can be printed double-sided.

Survival & Austere Medicine
https://1776patriotusa.com/survival-austere-medicine/

There is a sense, when considering the issues around survival medicine practice, that everything is overwhelming, that it is impossible for lay people to provide a high level of medical care and maintain a high level of population health.

We don’t think this is the case at all. We believe that intelligent lay people with some basic medical knowledge, skills, and equipment can deliver high quality health care. While it is obviously impossible for lay people to safely and competently deal with every medical problem, and there remain many complicated diagnoses requiring equallycomplicated or technologically advanced treatments, for 80-90% of the health problems afflicting humanity, simple things done well are all that is required to preserve life and limb and help alleviate suffering.

Hat Tip: Image to 'Violet', over at EHP-D:

I've a newbie learning homeopathic medicine remedies. So far I am completely amazed at how well they work!! There is a learning curve to learn how to identify the best remedy to take and how to dose. It's completely different mindset than the allopathic methods we are used to. Here is a recommended book:

The Home Doctor: Book Review
https://www.askaprepper.com/the-home-doctor-book-review/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=AAP

The Home Doctor promises to teach a regular Joe like me what meds to stockpile and what medical procedures I need can perform on my own, at home—you know, stuff like setting a broken bone and bandaging and stitching a wound but also things like how to manage Type-2 diabetes or joint pain.

When I ordered The Home Doctor, it said delivery to my doorstep would take around a week. It arrived a few days sooner, so that was quite a welcome surprise. ---CONTINUED---
