Pie and Sandwich Maker

These pie/sandwich makers are pretty much a one person cooker due to the single portion size, and are probably more of a novelty than a serious camp utensil. But in my opinion a must have.

From the buttered-bread beginning, just about anything can be placed in the middle. The bread forms a seal which prevents juicy items from leaking out. The butter keeps the bread from sticking, and helps it to brown. Margarine does not brown quite as well, but it does work.

Basic Pie-Maker Pie

2 slices of bread
1 tbs butter or margerine
2 tbs canned pie filling, any flavor

Butter one side of the bread slices. Place one slice onto one half of the pie-maker, with the buttered side against the metal. Place the pie filling in the middle of this slice of bread, and cover with the other slice, buttered side up. Swing the pie-maker closed and clamp shut. Most bread slices will stick out of the pie-maker to varying degrees. This may be trimmed off or not, as the cook wishes.

For a brown, crispy outside, place the pie-maker on hot coals. It will take about 10-15 minutes, depending on how hot they are. The crust sticking out will generally burn and may be trimmed and discarded.

Other ideas:

Use English Muffins and fill with breakfast selections. Meat and eggs should be precooked.
Cook French toast or One-Eyed Jacks (tear a hole in the middle of the bread slices and break an egg into it).
Grill Hamburgers, or any meat.
Use two thin hamburger patties instead of bread. Fill with cheese, mushrooms, onions, mustard, or whatever you can think of.
Fill with Swiss cheese and mushrooms.
Use jam or jelly instead of pie filling and make your own Pop-Tarts.
Try using prepared pie crust, rolled out flat, instead of bread for making dessert pastries.
